Andre Greipel of the Lotto Belisol won his first stage of the 2012 Tour de France in Rouen yesterday. The Lotto train dragged the German to the finish where he easily out sprinted the remaining strong men of Alessandro Petacchi (Lampre-ISD) and Tom Veelers (Argos-Shimano).
Remaining strong men? Well a crash at approx. 2.5km from the line took out several sprinters The most notable being world champion Mark Cavendish along with Bernhard Eisel his team mate and sole sprint companion. Green jersey wearer Peter Sagan came close to hitting the deck but stayed upright and managed to gain some more points with 5th position. Fabian Cancellara was also lucky to escape the carnage and retains his yellow jersey lead.
