Wiggins go faster kit (Road.cc)

Wiggins tech as reported on Road.cc

We’ve already given you the details of the UK Sport frame and fork that Bradley Wiggins rode to time trial glory but here’s the story of other specialist equipment that he used.

It’s pretty well known that Wiggins uses non-round chainrings from O.Symetric. The idea, in brief, is that the effective size of the chainring varies depending on where your legs are in the pedal stroke. You are pushing a smaller gear through the deadspots at the top and bottom of the pedal stroke, and a larger gear when the cranks are near horizontal – where you can produce most force. Make sense?

You’re not allowed to call the rings oval or elliptical, by the way. O.Symetric call them a TwinCam design.

Whether or not you’re convinced by the evidence that they improve power output and efficiency, we can see sales booming, particularly because Chris Froome uses O.Symetric as well.

The rest of the groupset looks like standard Shimano Dura-Ace mechanical. It’s interesting that both the front and rear brakes are positioned conventionally and exposed to the wind. Ever more time trial bikes come with a front brake that’s sheltered behind the fork legs and the rear one behind the bottom bracket.

That looks like a Hed H3 front wheel that Wiggins is running there but we’re not sure about the rear disc. The handlebar set up is a custom option.

The helmet, like the frame and fork, is a UK Sport design. It’s the Aero Helmet as shown on the UK Sport website with Wiggo’s mod roundel added. The rules state that the equipment has to be commercially available so UK Sport are obliged to sell it. However, they say, “The equipment… is manufactured in the UK to order by hand consequently lead time from order to delivery can sometimes be long.

“Items such as the frame, forks, and helmets were developed using cutting edge techniques, this R&D was funded by UKS and British Cycling. Although most of this expenditure has been absorbed by the GB Team, the very low volumes of equipment produced, the construction methods outlined above plus the use of the very best materials means the price of these items is in line with their specialist nature.”

In other words, you’ll have to work pretty hard to get a price, you’ll have to save up, and it might take a while. But it is available. Definitely.

You can’t see Wiggins’ shoes because he has Adidas shoe covers over the top to reduce drag, but we’re reliably informed that he raced in Bonts – Bont Zeros, to be precise. They are the shoes that he used for his Tour de France win too (although he got a yellow pair for riding into Paris).

Wiggins is a big fan of the Australian brand, despite them not being an official sponsor of Team Sky. The Zeros have a fully-mouldable carbon monocoque sole that’s very thin – just 3.6mm. The EVA insole is mouldable too while the uppers are laminated silver glass-fibre. They have a lace closure with an aero cover over the top although Wiggins obviously believes he can reduce drag still further with the shoe covers.

Bont give the weight of the Zeros at just 170g per shoe. If you want a pair, they’ll cost you £390 from Saddleback.

New in; Baristas-(iL) Soigneur Team Jersey

Fresh in  Just Arrived at Castelli Cafe we have some very limited edition Baristas-(iL) Soigneur Team Jerseys. You might recognise the (iL) Soigneur name  they make some fantastic bags just down the road in Bristol

Baristas – (iL) Soigneur Team Jersey

Both Baristas Bristol and (iL) Soigneur have a shared passion for cycling, coffee, good food and of course cycle racing, so it was perfectly natural for us to start hosting rides throughout the year.

Revolving around the Classic’s and Grand Tours, on our rides we dose up on caffeine and bacon, ride a local Bristol route, and return to Baristas to watch the race or stage, eat, drink and make merry.

To help us bring this all together and to help us look sooo much more Pro, we’ve been working with StudioLobster and Saddleback (Castelli Clothing) to design a Team Baristas-(iL) Soigneur Jersey.

The original remit to StudioLobster was to make the design look amazing, to stand out from the crowd and regardless of your knowledge of Baristas – (iL)Soigneur you’d see the jersey as a great piece of design and want it for that.

I think we’ve achieved that by the bucket load and when combined with the Castelli heritage we have a great jersey.

Wiggins Looking West for Victory

It would appear Bradley Wiggins in his quest to be the first English man to win the Tour du France’s coverted yellow jersey, may be looking for help outside of Europe. Recently spotted at the Criterium du Dauphine Wiggins was seen testing ENVE rims built onto Chris King hubs Both these American brands are bought into the UK by Bristol based Saddleback….

Bradley testing what appears to be ENVE Wheels

Testing Testing is that Bradley Wiggins on ENVE rims and Chris King Hubs?? Suggestions please?

At the Critérium du Dauphiné, Stage 5’s mountainous profile had riders reaching for bigger cassettes and lighter weight wheels with shallower profiles. Team Sky captain Bradley Wiggins went a step further with at least two sets of custom-built wheels.

Fitted to his main Pinarello Dogma 2 was a set of Chris King R45 hubs — something we’ve not seen before at this level of road racing — laced two-cross to a set of shallow-profile carbon tubular rims, which weren’t marked but looked to be from Enve Composites…… read more at this link

Smart ENVE System 6.7 Carbon Clinchers on Bike Radar

The fruits of the partnership between ENVE and aerodynamicist Simon Smart continue to bear fruit. Last month we brought you an exclusive look at two new additions to their SES range, the time trial-specific 8.9 Tubular and the 3.4 Clincher, and today it’s the turn of the 6.7 Clincher.

As with models in the Smart Enve System range, the 6.7s are developed as a complete wheelset – hence the variable rim depths (60mm on the front, 70mm at the rear) and widths (26mm/24mm). The science behind this says that having a wider and shallower front rim maximises stability across a broad section of wind angles, while having a deeper and narrower rear rim minimizes drag of the trailing edge and cuts turbulence.

Endura Racing Team Up with ENVE

Endura Racing and ENVE announce new partnership

Endura Racing are very pleased to announce a partnership with ENVE, through their UK distributor Saddleback Ltd, which will see Endura Racing race on the groundbreaking Smart ENVE System 6.7 wheelsets in races at home and abroad.

DSC_9182

Julian Winn (Directeur Sportive) and Richard Bowen (Service Course Manager) paid a visit to Saddleback’s headquarters recently to meet Andrew Griffiths (Marketing Manager) and Ash Matthews (ENVE Product Manager) and receive the Smart ENVE System 6.7 wheelsets.

The Smart ENVE System™ (SES™) was designed in multiple frame designs in order to produce the maximum drag reduction and stability. The result is an integrated wheel system which handles predictably and displays superior drag results when installed in
multiple bicycle frame designs.
• The front wheel is wider and shallower to improve stability and reduce drag in any wind condition.
• The rear wheel is deeper to reduce drag where stability is less affected.
• The focus on steering stability resulted in improved handling and predictability in varying crosswinds.

The Saddleback Fred Whitton Challenge

On Sunday (13th May) The best part of 2000 riders will be coming to my home county of Cumbria to ride the toughest Sportive in the country, The Saddleback Fred Whitton Challenge. So what awaits them.. Quite possibly the toughest sportive in the UK over a gruelling 112 mile course, climbing in excess of 4000m with gradients over 30%. Oh and its probably going to rain. In 2011 we had rain sleet hail and warm sunshine, so what do you wear?

Castelli make performance cycling clothing for Team Garmin Barracuda currently dominating the Giro d’Italia and they know a thing or too about fabrics cut and optimising both.

So what to wear then, cool windy wet then warm serious climbing scary descents.. It has to be the Gabba Jersey a windproof water resistant short sleeve jersey that the Garmin team use for cold wet races, Team it up with a Bodypaint Bib Short with the ProgettoX2 pad for all day comfort second to non. Throw in some NanoFlex warmers for warmth and water resistance and your all good to go what ever the weather throws at you. Oh you may want to take a shell jacket something like the Castelli Sottile just in case your stranded oh the weather really turns. Castelli Gabba

Good luck to all who are entering dress well and stay safe I will be in a one of the support vechiles again this year so give me a wave as you ride past.

Will we see 6 hours beaten this year?
